John B. Shepherd Central Utility Plant (CAU)

This building at the campus of Clark Atlanta University serves as the John B. Shepherd Central Utility Plant of Clark Atlanta, and neighboring Morehouse and Spelman Colleges. The plant was designed to incorporate phase-in service to eliminate downtime.

  • $12 million total project cost.
  • 8,000 tons of design chilled water cap. (1,300 tons installed in Phase I).
  • Variable-primary chilled water pumping system.
  • Variable speed cooling tower fans.
  • Waterside economizer (free cooling) system.
  • Two 40,000 lb/hr gas-fired water tube steam boilers.
  • Boiler stack economizer.
  • Boiler blowdown economizer.
  • One 12 megawatt electrode steam boiler.
  • Advanced control system allowing for utility-response fuel-switching based on lowest fuel cost at any given time.
  • Propane-air backup fuel system allowing for qualification of interruptible fuel rate.
  • Metering of all chilled water, steam, and high temp hot water leaving the plant.

GEI served as the primary design consultant by providing mechanical and electrical engineering design services for this project. We have been retained to design Phase II, which is presently ongoing.
