Project Description

Fort Greely: Military Missile Defense Base

GEI was brought in to assist in the energy auditing, report writing and technical development for an Investment Grade Audit of Fort Greely’s existing facilities. Set in the Alaskan Interior, this site is subject the most extreme climate in North America, and required unique solutions

  • Auditing of over 1.25 million square feet of conditioned space in over 100 separate buildings.
  • Project resulted in $800,000 in annual energy savings.
  • Full Thermal Imaging audits were done to evaluate envelope measures.
  • New EIFS exterior building insulation.
  • Aging and leaky steam systems repaired or replaced.
  • Elimination of significant overheating due to poor HVAC controls.
  • Winter audits were required to observe building operation and meet client deadlines.

100 miles southeast of Fairbanks Alaska, Fort Greely annually experiences temperatures dropping below -45◦F in the winter and rising to low 80’s in the summer. GEI was required to keep climate extremes in mind in all of its proposed energy savings measures and engineering design.
